That Iceland Road Trip

How many girls can you fit in a Sprinter? Sandra, Caroline, Julie and Julie left Canada to explore fantastic Iceland and the best way to do this was obviously in a camper van! Here’s their story.

Where did you rent the camper and what vehicle was it ?

We rented our camper online with GoCamper, big enough for 4 girls and 4 backpacks. Well equip with Gas Stove, sink, electric cooler and a heater for the cold Icelandic nights!

For which reasons did you choose to rent a camper van instead of AirBnBs?

We wanted to be free and had no stress to be somewhere if we wanted to spend more time in a special place. Also for us it was a new adventure no one had done it before and it was the easiest and cheapest way to visit this beautiful country. we could stop when ever we wanted to and enjoy the beauty of the landscape.

Can you share a useful tip for a successful all-girls road trip?

Girls normally we do not travel light….. so this is tips number one : Pack light ! Also we talk to each other before to make sure not to bring the same things. also travel with small bottles and always carry a raincoat, light and warm cloths and always dress as an onion, in Iceland in 5 minutes you can go from 15 degres to -minus 4 ! or from Sun to rain! And never forget to charge your camera!

Can you describe your itinerary? Did you sleep in campgrounds or is it easy to boondock everywhere?

We landed in Keflavik the international airport, from there it was easy to hop on a bus direction downtown Reykjavik the Capital of Iceland, to go to the GoCamper office to pick up the Van. Our itinerary was already plan and we wanted to start clock wise, go up north first, east, south and finish with west where the Capital is. In Iceland you can park you van and sleep where ever you wanted there is no restrictions.

So we had decided to go along the way and find the most beautiful spot each night and wake up with amazing views. First day we drove approximately 5 hours all the way up to Godafoss fall where we slept the first night, stopping by Akureyri this other main city and important Seaport of northern island. The next day we drove in the Myvatan lake area to do some hiking to many different spot and we had no choice to stop at our first natural thermal bath, second best after blue Lagoon.

That night we slept into the most beautiful area east, the Fjord Seyoisfjorour. from there all the way back to the Capital it is where you have most of the stops. we saw the glacier at Jokulsaron, a few hick to see a famous fall Svartifoss. We slept at Vik that night where you find the Black beach, the most south of the island. The last part of the trip seeing the most amazing waterfalls and highest one of Iceland Skogafoss, then a relaxing afternoon at the nature pool Seljavallalaug. On our way back to the Capital of Reykjavik there was two places we had to stop by, wich was the Stokkur Geysir and the fall of Gullfuss. We kept the Blue Lagoon for the end of this trip as it is close to the aiport on our trip back home and it was a perfect ending to this amazing trip.

Can you tell us about a funny moment that happened along your trip?

I can not put my finger on anything funny but except one night in a local bar some Vikings thought Canadian could not drink shots….. they dare us all night oh well we proved them that Canadians girls can drink and stay up all night!
